Effect of Total Knee Replacement on Gait Stability

چکیده
INTRODUCTION A deleterious relationship between knee osteoarthritis (OA) and standing balance has been well established. Hassan et al. (2001), report knee OA patients with increased body sway during quiet standing relative to control. Static stability impairments are thought to be the result of proprioceptive deficits, muscle weakness, and knee pain brought about by the articular degeneration of the knee joint. Leveille et al (2002), suggest that reflex muscle inhibition due to chronic pain could compromise the lower limb muscular response to perturbation. Pain may also decrease an elder’s confidence in their physical abilities which may contribute to the relationship between pain and instability. However, assessments of standing postural control are not representative of the dynamic stability requirements of daily living.

Knee Kinematic Improvement After Total Knee Replacement Using a Simplified Quantitative Gait Analysis Method
Objectives: The aim of this study was to extract suitable spatiotemporal and kinematic parameters to determine how Total Knee Replacement (TKR) alters patients’ knee kinematics during gait, using a rapid and simplified quantitative two-dimensional gait analysis procedure. Methods: Two-dimensional kinematic gait pattern of 10 participants were collected before and after the TKR surgery,...
متن کاملThe influence of total knee-replacement design on walking and stair-climbing.
The relationship between gait and prosthetic design was studied during level walking and stair-climbing for twenty-six asymptomatic patients after total knee replacement. An age-matched group of fourteen control subjects was also studied. Five designs of total knee replacement Geomedic, Gunston, total condylar, duopatellar, and Cloutier were used. Differences in gait could be identified on the ...
متن کاملThe Effect of Neurofeedback on Postural Balance and Attention in Patients Suffering From Knee Osteoarthritis With Bilateral Total Knee Replacement: A Pilot Study
Objective: Increasing life expectancy leads to an increase in degenerative diseases such as osteoarthritis One of the important factors that affect the mobility and activity of daily living in patients suffering from knee osteoarthritis with bilateral Total knee replacement, is dynamic balance. Traditional rehabilitation approaches that target pain and the strengthening program of lower extremi...
متن کاملBiomechanical and energetic effects of a stance-control orthotic knee joint.
Users of traditional knee-ankle-foot orthoses (KAFOs) walk with either locked or unlocked knee joints depending on the level of stability required. Some users may benefit from new stance-control KAFOs that prevent stance-phase knee flexion but allow swing-phase flexion. We collected data from nine nondisabled adults who walked with KAFOs that incorporated the Horton Stance-Control Orthotic Knee...
متن کاملGait analysis of patients following total knee replacement: a systematic review.
Gait analysis has been used to objectively measure patients' function following total knee replacement (TKR). Whilst the findings of this research may have important implications for the understanding of the outcomes of TKR, the methodology of existing research appears to be diverse and many of the results inconsistent. The objective of this systematic review was to synthesise reported findings...
متن کاملKinematics and Mechanical Properties of Knees following Patellar Replacing and Patellar Retaining Total Knee Arthroplasty
Knee injury is a common medical issue. A full understanding of the kinematics and mechanical properties of knees following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) repair utilizing patellar replacement (only the base of the patella is replaced) versus patellar retaining surgical techniques is still lacking. In the current paper, we investigated magnetic resonance (MR) imaging data from knees repaired by t...
